So If you know me you know how obsessive I am about having that perfect flawless base. However there is nothing worse than spending £30/£40 on a foundation and it looks like trash, well I am here to save you.
I have dry skin skin but I love a matte, poreless and flawless base but matte foundations never work for me as they cling to patches that I don't want to show through! I also have days where I am gagging to be dewy but I have to know how to not make my face an oil slick! Here is what I have learnt along the way on how to make foundations look the best that they possibly can.
Primer is the key to foundation longevity and dependent on the primer it will affect how your final look. Without a primer your face will not perform all day & will not be as flawless as it needs to be.
So here are my top primers, each for different reasons.
For a Dewy Finish...
If I want to give a luminous & natural finish to my foundation I use a combination of two primers ( extra I know) but this combo makes my foundation stick and look like JLO has blessed my face herself.
This primer will make your foundation cling to your face & your skin after using this will be plump AF, This has actual honey in which is a natural antiseptic so if you suffer with spots but also have dry skin this is the one for you. This makes your foundation shiny but doesn't give enough glow for me so I always use it as a combination with..
Desi Perkins swears by this, for her luminous glow. It works amazing as a hydrating primer but also is great when it is mixed with your foundation. I use it to sheer out my foundations and because I always use warm toned foundations I use the Goldlite shade to keep that bronze glow. It turns any foundation from flat to glowy instantly.
For a Matte Finish...
Matte foundations are a big no for me, That doesn't mean that I don't want to look photo shopped sometimes.
If you are oily then skip this step, if you are dry this is the one for you. This primer revives your dry skin the perfect amount but also grabs the soul out of your foundation, it will not budge. I love the spray version of this to set my face but that adds a satin glow to your skin.
This is such an amazing pore filler, it controls shine and mattes out the foundation a perfect amount. Its an amazing dupe for the Benefit Porefessional. This primer is good if you skin has texture also because it even outs the texture of the skin.
This is 100% the most crucial part of making any foundation work. The tools you use to apply & blend your base can make or break any look. Even if a foundation is awful you can make it work with the right tools.
Real techniques were my first ever experience with makeup tools and they are something I have always stuck with because I trust them am I am besotted with the Founders Sam & Nic. The Miracle Complexion sponge is exactly that.. a miracle. It fixes any of my foundation boo boos and blends out anything. I have over 20 of these in my makeup collection I always obsessively buy the multi-packs at Christmas to ensure I never run out. I love that you can use these dry for a fuller coverage too, it gives you the ability to manipulate the sponge to do whatever you want.
For a perfect airbrushed application I spray hydrating facial mist onto my already damp sponge to press my foundation into my face, it honestly makes such a difference and prevents cake face.
This brush is amazing for concealer & touch ups. You can use it for concealer palettes to blend out for a natural look or you can use it to set your face with powder. I have 4 of these brushes in my makeup bag because I am constantly using them for various things. If I want to achieve a no makeup makeup look I spot conceal my problem areas with this as It gives such a natural finish.
How you set you face is most important, If you have worked your ass off getting a flawless base you don't want it to melt off after a few hours. I honestly do not have a preference when it comes to setting my face however I normally powder in my T-Zone and then use a hydrating mist all over.
